First illustrations

The last few weeks have seen some great progress on the book front. The Kickstarter campaign officially ended on May 10, but it takes a couple of weeks before all of the funds get processed and deposited into my account. Now that those funds are in had, I’m more easily able to pay the illustrator and cover some other expenses.

Erica, the illustrator, and I are in touch every couple of days and have gotten into a good flow. She’s got the first few illustrations into final draft and I think they are looking great. We’re still trying to finalize the typeface to use. But thes first illustrations give you an idea of where we’re going with it.

Next Saturday I will be reading the story to a large group for the first time at the Grinnell College alumni weekend. So on Saturday morning I will read the story and show the illustrations that are done, combined with a slide show of photos from Edith’s life. We’ve also put together some coloring sheets and stickers to share. I’m hoping it will be fun for kids and all ages. So I figure I will either come out of that day feeling a lot better or a lot worse about the projects – fingers crossed for it to go well.

Thanks to everyone who has been so supportive and encouraging on this endeavor. I suppose when you’re excited about something you always wish it would go faster. I wish I could wave a magic wand and have the fully illustrated book in my (and your) hands. But for now we’ll have to put our faith in the old adage that good things come to those who wait.
